Mishkah University’s graduation ceremony was held on Sunday May 5th from 11 to 4 PM at Tawheed Center in Detroit, Michigan. 

This event was particularly significant as 20 of the students represented the first graduating class from our Detroit branch, having earned Bachelors degrees in Islamic Studies. In addition our online English program conferred its first seven Associates degrees and one Bachelors degree in Islamic Studies. Many notable scholars were at the festivities including Dr. Salah Assawy, Dr. Mwafak Algalaieni, Sh Ahmad Musa, and Dr. Ahmad Assawy from Egypt.

Mishkah University sends hearty congratulations to Sh. Mowlid Ali who successfully defended his thesis and earned his Masters in Islamic Law. Our students’ accomplishments are a source of great pride for us.

Sh. Mowlid’s thesis is titled “Preventing harm takes precedence over Accruing Benefit: A Practical Application in the field of Fiqh and Dawah.
“(قاعدة درء المفسدة أولى من جلب المصلحة وتطبيقاتها الدّعويّة والفقهيّة (دراسة فقهية ودعويّة”

Reflecting Mishkah’s truly international character, Sh. Mowlid presented his thesis in Minnesota, with the respected scholars on his thesis committee joining in virtually all the way from Egypt. Written in Arabic, Sh Mowlid intends to translate the work so English speakers can also benefit from its findings.

“This is a great time for Mishkah,” said Dr. Hatem al-Haj, dean of the College of Islamic Studies. “A distinguished graduate of its BA program has just finished his MA in Shari’a. I wish Br. Mowlid a life full of accomplishments in teaching and serving the knowledge of our deen, and I expect that he will live up to that great responsibility.”

In 2010, Sh. Mowlid earned the distinction of being Mishkah University’s first student to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. “I chose Mishkah because I believe Mishkah is the best Islamic university in the West,” Sh Mowlid says. “You learn the authentic knowledge of Islam from contemporary scholars who are well-rounded scholars. In addition, you can study at Mishkah wherever you are in the world.”

As he was working on his masters, Sh. Mowlid was also applying his knowledge in his local community as the Imam of Masjid Jamaat Ibad ar Rahman in Durham, North Carolina. The masjid serves the largest Muslim community in the area.”The knowledge I received from Mishkah has always been useful in my work as an Imam,” he says.

We are delighted Sh. Mowlid intends to continue his journey of seeking knowledge at Mishkah – he plans to enroll in the doctorate program at the University inshaAllah, citing the presence of experienced scholars with expertise in various fields of Shari’a as the driving factor behind his decision. “I am very pleased with my instructors,” he says. “May Allah bless their efforts.”

We ask Allah, Most High, to increase him in knowledge and pray for his continued success as an imam, dai’ee, and student.

Brothers and Sisters, 2012 was a transformative year for Mishkah. We embraced a new name that reflects our ongoing commitment to illuminating minds and changing lives. We introduced new faculty members and rolled out several new courses so students can benefit from an even wider range of knowledge. And we have been gradually upgrading our infrastructure so we can better serve our students and continue to deliver Islamic education with a difference.

Allah, the Most Beneficient and Most Generous, has been the driving force behind our success. And the support, financial and otherwise, that we have received from community members like you has further enabled us to fulfill an important goal - to make authentic Islamic knowledge accessible to as many Muslims as possible around the globe.

Dr. Muhammad who teaches Penal Law and Islamic Pedagogy at Mishkah University was awarded his PhD from Al-Azhar’s Faculty of Languages and Translation after successfully completing his dissertation on “The Impact of Juristic Differences on the Translation of Hadiths of Legal Rulings.” His research was an intensive study of Muhsin Khan’s translation of Sahih Bukhari.

The success of our Muslim scholars and teachers is indeed success for the entire community – by sharing and propagating the knowledge that Allah has endowed them, they play a pivotal role in helping to educate Muslims about their deen, illuminating minds and changing lives. We therefore pray that Allah will continue to bless our dear instructor and enable him to use the knowledge he has gained for the benefit of the Ummah.

In early September, Mishkah’s Executive Director, Ustadh Wafiq Fannoun welcomed potential students and supporters at our booth at the 49th annual ISNA convention in Washington D.C. The booth also showcased some of Mishkah’s books and publications.

In addition, we also hosted a booth at the annual Abu Bakr Siddique Convention in Minneapolis, enabling us to answer questions and share information with hundreds of seekers of knowledge.
